PWC Lift vs. Roll-On Port — Which Is Right for You?

A roll-on port (also called a floating dock or PWC port) is a buoyant drive-on platform that holds your PWC at the waterline. A PWC lift raises your watercraft completely out of the water. Both have their place — here’s how to choose.

✓  Advantages of a PWC Lift

1
Total Hull Protection
Raising your PWC completely out of the water prevents hull blistering, water absorption, marine growth, and waterline staining that occur with long-term docking at the waterline.
2
Superior Stability in Rough Water
In areas with heavy boat traffic or high wind, lifts are far more secure. Floating ports can move, shake, and cause damage in rough conditions — and docking onto a port in rough water can be nearly impossible. With an optional remote control, you can lower your Econo Lift at the push of a button and drive straight on, even in choppy conditions.
3
Easier Maintenance & Access
With your PWC raised out of the water, cleaning the hull, performing maintenance, and covering the watercraft are all significantly easier than with a port that keeps it at water level.
4
No Roller Damage
Some roll-on port roller systems can cause hull damage or delamination, particularly on newer, lighter PWC models. Econo Lift’s bunk-style lift design eliminates this risk entirely.
5
Adjusts for Changing Water Levels
Econo Lift’s hydraulic system keeps your PWC high and dry regardless of seasonal or weather-driven water level changes — no manual adjustments needed.

≡  Advantages of a Roll-On Port

1
Lower Upfront Cost
Basic floating ports are generally less expensive than hydraulic lifts. If budget is the primary concern and your water conditions are calm, a port may be a reasonable starting point.
2
Simple Drive-On Access
In calm water conditions, roll-on ports offer quick and straightforward access — simply drive on and you’re done. However this advantage disappears in rough water, where docking on a moving port becomes difficult or impossible.
Our Recommendation

For Alabama lakes — especially Lewis Smith Lake, Lake Guntersville, and Lake Martin where wake boat traffic is heavy — a PWC lift is almost always the better long-term investment. The hull protection, rough water stability, and ease of maintenance typically outweigh the higher upfront cost within the first season.
